James Paul Marsden, born September18, 1973, is an American actor and singer. James began his acting career by guest-starring in television shows including; The Nanny, Saved by the Bell: The New Class and Party of Five. James portrayed Scott Summers/Cyclops in the X-Men film series. James is known for his portrayal of Corny Collins in the 2007 remake of Hairspray. He continued his success and starred in films including Enchanted and Hop. James had the lead male roles in the films 27 Dresses and The Best of Me.

James has starred in varous independent films, such as; Small Apartments, Bacherlorette and Robot & Frank. Later, he returned to television by guest-starring in Modern Family, and portrayed Liz Lemon’s love interest, Criss Chros, in 30 Rock for a supporting role. James had a role as President John F. Kennedy in Lee Daniels’ The Butler, and had a supporting role in Achorman 2: The Legend Continues. James currently portrays Teddy Flood in the HBO series, Westworld

James was born in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and is the son of Kathleen (née Scholtz) and James Luther Marsden. His ancestry is English, German, Scottish and distant French. James has four sibilings, his younger sisters, Jennifer and Elizabeth, and two brothers, Jeff and Robert. James attended Hefner Middle School and Putnam City North High School. Then later he attended Oklahoma State University, and he studied broadcast journalism. He left after over a year to move to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career.

James’ first role was three episodes of The Nanny as Eddie, Margaret Sheffield’s love interest. He then went on to star in the Canadian series, Boogies Diner. James guest starred on Party of Five, as Griffin, in the season one finale. However, Jeremy London took over the role after James landed a new role. He has also guest starred in the series Saved by the Bell: The New Class. Later he starred in the ABC series Second Noah. James auditioned for a role in Primal Fear, however, Edward Norton got the role instead, and he turned down the lead role in 54. James went on to star in the film Disturbing Behavior, with actress Katie Holmes, and starred in Gossip, with actress Kate Hudson. He appeared in the first half of season five of Ally McBeal as a main cast member.

James was cast as Scott Summers/Cyclops in the X-Men films. His portrayal of the character in the films was well received and earned him a Blockbuster Award for Best Supporting Actor.

In 2004, James co-starred in the romantic drama, The Notebook. In 2007, he portrayed Corny Collins in the film Hairspray, and sang two songs, “The Nicest Kids In Town” and “(It’s) Hairspray.” The film and soundtrack were critically acclaimed and the soundtrack was certified Platinum by the RIAA. His next role was Prince Edward in the animated/live action film Enchanted, alongside actress Amy Adams.
James had a role in the 2008 romantic comedy, 27 Dresses, alongside actress Katherine Heigl. He starred in the teen comedy, Sex Drive, and his performance was praised. James has received a Teen Choice Awards nomination for Choice Movie Actor in a Comedy, for his roles in Enchanted and 27 Dresses.

In 2009, James portrayed the male lead in The Box, which was based on the 1970 short story, Button, Button. James was cast in the comedy (remake) Death at a Funeral, in 2010.
In 2011, James guest-starred on ABC’s Modern Family, portraying a homeless squatter of Cam and Mitchell. James was the live action male lead in the film Hop. Later in 2011, James portrayed the lead in a remake of Straw Dogs. During 2012 and 2013, James had a recurring role in the sixth and seventh seasons of 30 Rock. He portrayed Criss Chros, the boyfriend (and later, husband) of the main character, Liz Lemon. In 2013, he co-starred with Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg in the action film 2 Guns. Afterwards, he starred in The Butler as President John F. Kennedy. He portrayed Jack Lime in the film Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.

James then starred in the film, The Best of Me. His character Cyclops in the X-Men films, appeared in a brief cameo for X-Men: Days of Future Past during 2014. Also in 2014, it was announced that James would join the HBO series, Westworld, which started airing in 2016.
